For some reason Giorgione decided to discard it in favor of a simple hood. Nevertheless, when the scholar projected an image on the huge screen of a painting by Vittore Carpaccio of the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem, the old man in that painting was wearing the kind of headpiece discarded by Giorgione.

Hi there, I am looking for this paining that you listed above in your post to compare with the Xray's of the Three Philosophers. I can not find it anywhere. Could you point me in the right direction. This evidence is crucial for my research and argument on this painting.
Thank you Jennifer Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03008314400811667847noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7054785923214156833.post-59573044510257738172010-11-04T14:48:32.395-07:002010-11-04T14:48:32.395-07:00Thanks for the link. The article about the Temple Builders is mentioned in the 2004 catalog, Giorgione, Myth and Enigma, but I have not read it.

FrankDr. Fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08469403843869655063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7054785923214156833.post-45635637311468810652010-11-04T07:36:26.246-07:002010-11-04T07:36:26.246-07:00Sorry about the above post Frank, there was an err...Sorry about the above post Frank, there was an error in the link(fixed below!)

I'm posting the link below for anyone happening past that may be interested - there is a great article by the Freemasons on this painting, they are quite intent on a Biblical reading too!

Article: King Solomon and the Temple Builders

Includes XRay images and full references!

Looking at the colours, I am also liking the idea of the naturalistic element. We know Giorgione was fond of nature - in this manner the colour of the clothing represents essential elements of nature - rocks/sand(golden), sky/earth(blue/red), and cloud/fields(white/green)

I am currently working on an article about an elusive but extremely curious reading relating this work to Leonardo, Raphael and the Madonna of The Rocks. I'll come back to post a link when it is completed.

Kind Regards
HAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02091875643921165081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7054785923214156833.post-19058513402452711602010-09-21T11:19:27.985-07:002010-09-21T11:19:27.985-07:00Thanks H. Following Vasari most assume that they did but I agree with you in thinking that the young Giorgione might have influenced the old Leonardo in some way. I think of the way in which the young Mozart must have blown the minds of older composers. Venice was by far the greatest and wealthiest city that Leonardo had ever seen.

FrankDr. Fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08469403843869655063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7054785923214156833.post-1805349029587381542010-09-21T07:53:25.596-07:002010-09-21T07:53:25.596-07:00Lovely post Frank. I think Giorgione's pentimenti are as fascinating as his end product at times!

I also think the sacred reading here is definitely a sound one.

How I would have loved to be present when Giorgione met and charmed Leonardo with his wit and eloquence - they must have talked about painting in oils... surely?!

H Niyazi
threepipeproblem.blogspot.comAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02091875643921165081noreply@blogger.com
